How to Choose the Coating Material for a Non-Stick Pan?

What is a non-stick coating?

Non-stick coating refers to the application of a special material on the surface of a cooking pan, which makes it easier for food to be cooked without sticking to the bottom of the pan.

What are the common types of non-stick coatings?

The most common coating material is PTFE, and its representative brand is Teflon. PTFE features excellent non-stickiness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Its surface is smooth, which can effectively prevent food from sticking, thus achieving a non-stick effect. Besides, PTFE also has its limitations. When the temperature exceeds 350 degrees Celsius, harmful substances will be released.

The ceramic coating is usually made of natural ceramic materials. It does not contain harmful chemicals, making it healthier and more environmentally friendly. The ceramic coating comes in various colors and has a nice appearance. Its surface is smooth and has excellent non-stick properties. It has high heat resistance, with a maximum temperature of 450 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for high-temperature cooking. However, the ceramic coating is prone to wear and tear, so its service life is relatively short.

The diamond/sapphire/titanium alloy coating is made by adding titanium particles, diamond particles and other reinforcing materials to the PTFE coating to enhance the hardness and durability of the coating and extend its service life. However, the core non-stick component is usually still PTFE, so the safety and temperature limitations are the same as those of the ordinary PTFE coating.

The aluminum coating is a hard, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant layer of aluminum oxide formed on the surface of the aluminum cooking pan. This layer of aluminum oxide itself has a certain anti-adhesion property.

Advantages of the non-stick coating

1. Non-stick pans greatly reduce the problem of food sticking, making cooking much easier and cleaning much simpler.

2. Using non-stick pans can help reduce the amount of oil used, which is beneficial to people's health.

3. Non-stick pans also improve the taste of food to some extent. Because the food won't be damaged due to sticking to the pan, maintaining the integrity of the food is ensured.

Notes for using non-stick cookware

1. Do not heat an empty pan for extended periods.

2. Do not use metal spatulas – use wooden or silicone spatulas.

3. Do not rinse with cold water immediately – use warm water or wait to cool.

4. Clean with a soft cloth or sponge.
